Cool deck repair, patch or resurface

A patch holds on one tight crack and fails on a deck that is chalking.

Cool deck repair is worth paying for in 1 case only, a tight crack with sound bonded topping all around it. Patch that and it holds. Where the surface leaves pale dust, or sounds hollow under your knuckles, the topping has let go of the slab and any patch lifts with it. That deck gets resurfaced from 8 dollars per sq ft installed, 1 to 3 days on site.

When a patch actually holds

One crack, tight, with topping either side that stays firm under your knuckles and leaves nothing on your hand. That is the deck where a repair kit earns its money. Open the crack out, clean it, fill it and work the texture back in before the material skins over. The color will never match, so expect a pale line that softens over a season. It will hold, because the material either side is still bonded to the slab and nothing is pulling the repair apart. Same story for a chipped corner at the coping, or one spalled spot where a table leg sat for ten years. Local damage on a sound deck is a local repair. We tell people that on the visit and we do not sell them a resurfacing they do not need yet.

When a patch is money burned

Two signs say stop. The first is dust. Wipe a dry hand across the deck and if it comes back pale, the binder holding that topping together has finished its life, and nothing sticks to powder. The second is sound. Rap along the deck with your knuckles. Where the note goes dead and drummy, the topping is floating on air instead of gripping the slab. Filler pushed into a crack in a floating panel gets levered straight back out by the first hot week, because the panel moves all day and the repair does not. You get one more summer at best. Then you pay for the patch, pay to grind the patch off again, and pay for the resurfacing you were quoted at the start.

What each answer costs you

A patch is a bag of material and an afternoon. If that is the right call on your deck, do it yourself and spend nothing with us. Resurfacing starts at 8 dollars per sq ft installed, runs 1 to 3 days on site and is walkable after 24 to 48 hours. Nothing gets demolished, so no dumpster and no new slab. The honest comparison is not patch against resurface. It is one patch now plus resurfacing in two years, against resurfacing now. We measure free within 24 hours, hand you a fixed written price, and put a 2 year workmanship warranty in the contract before you pay anything. If your deck only needs the patch, we say it at the visit and leave you to it.

Questions we get

Can I patch a cool deck crack myself?

Yes, when the topping either side of the crack is firm and leaves no dust. Buy a repair compound made for acrylic cement toppings, open the crack out, clean it, fill it and texture it before it skins. The repair will show as a pale line for a while. It will stay put. If the deck around it is dusty or hollow, do not bother.

How long does a cool deck patch last?

On sound topping, years. On a deck that is already chalking or drummy, one Florida summer. Heat cycles work a floating panel against the repair every single day and the bond gives up at the edges first. You will watch the outline of the patch lift before the crack itself comes back. At that point the money is gone and the deck is worse.

Why does the same crack keep coming back?

Because the crack lives in the slab and the topping only shows it to you. Rigid filler over a joint that opens and closes daily splits along the same line by next season. If the crack is wide enough to catch a fingernail, or one side sits higher than the other, that is slab movement. We flag it before anyone quotes you a new surface.

Should I repair or resurface my cool deck?

Walk the whole deck first, not just the damage. If it is one or two spots and the rest is firm and dust free, repair it. If chalk comes off on your hand across wide areas, or several panels sound hollow, a patch buys you one summer and then you start over. Resurface once and be done with it.

What is the difference between Kool deck and cool deck?

There is 1 real difference and it is trademark, not chemistry. Kool Deck is a registered Mortex product, an acrylic and cement topping troweled over fresh concrete. Cool deck, spelled with a C, is what everyone in Florida calls that finish and every lookalike that copied it, whichever brand actually went down. For repair the distinction changes nothing. Both are thin toppings bonded to a slab, both chalk under sun and chlorine, both go drummy when the bond lets go, and neither can be patched once it sounds hollow. What decides your repair is whether the topping around the crack is firm and dust free.

When the chalk spreads past the crack, the fix is kool deck resurfacing over the slab you already have.
