What Playground Surfacing Costs Installed

Area, depth, color share and base condition set the number, from 8 dollars per sq ft.

Poured playground surfacing starts at 8 dollars per sq ft installed, and four things move it from there. Area, because small lots carry the setup. Depth, which is agreed in writing for the fall height of your equipment. How much of the surface is colored EPDM rather than black SBR base. And what condition the slab or stone base is in.

What moves the price

Four variables and nothing exotic. Area first. Below a few hundred square feet, mobilization and setup are a real share of the bill, so the rate per sq ft looks high. Spread the same crew and the same mixer over a school lot and the rate settles. Depth second, and it is the biggest one, because material consumption tracks depth directly. A shallow walkway and a deep landing zone under a tall climber are not the same project even on the same site. Third, how much of the area is colored EPDM. Colored granule costs a multiple of black recycled crumb, so a full color field prices differently from color over a black base. Fourth, base condition. Grinding, patching and re-sloping a tired slab is real work and it belongs on the quote from day one.

What the written quote lists

Ask for it line by line and read the lines. Prepared area in square feet, measured not estimated. Depth for each zone, with the zones marked on a drawing, because depth changes across a playground and one number for the whole lot is a warning on its own. Base work, listed as grinding, crack treatment, patching and priming, priced from the site visit rather than found later. Removal and disposal of old mulch or tiles, in the price or clearly out of it. Granule type per layer, black base and colored top named separately. Days on site and the date the surface can be used again. Warranty terms in the contract, not in an email. Ours is a fixed written price, 2 year workmanship warranty, and the quote you sign is the invoice you pay.

Traps in a cheap quote

A low number usually means something was left out. The common one is depth. Quote a thinner build than your equipment needs and the price drops, and you find out the hard way. The second is base prep, quoted at zero and raised once the crew is standing on a slab that will not hold a bond. The third is granule. A quote can read colored surface and still mean a thin scatter of EPDM over black, or black with a color wash on top that goes grey by next summer. The fourth is a phone price with no site visit, because nobody can price a playground they have not stood on. Our measurement is free and it happens within 24 hours. Bring the other quotes and we will read them with you line by line.

Questions we get

How much does poured playground surfacing cost per square foot?

Every poured job here begins at 8 dollars per sq ft installed. Where your job lands above that depends on the depth agreed for your equipment, how much colored EPDM is in the design, the size of the area and the state of the base. We measure on site free within 24 hours and hand you one fixed written number, not a range.

Why is poured rubber more expensive than mulch?

Day one it is. Mulch is bought again and again, raked back into the landing zones every week and topped up every year, and somebody is paid to do that. Poured rubber is bought once, it stays where it was laid and it asks for a rinse. Run both over the years you actually own the playground and the gap closes.

Does the price change if the depth changes across the playground?

Yes, and it should. A toddler frame and a tall climber on the same lot do not sit on the same build, so the quote carries a depth for each zone and a square foot figure for each. That is why the total is not one rate times one area. Ask for the zones on a drawing so you can see what you are paying for where.

Is removing the old surface included in the price?

On our quotes yes, it is a line you can read. Loose mulch comes out and old tiles come up, because a poured surface needs a solid drained base under it, and disposal is part of that line. On somebody else's quote, check for it before you sign. A missing removal line is one of the easiest ways for a cheap number to grow later.

What is the cheapest option for playground flooring?

Engineered wood fiber and sand are the cheapest playground surfaces to buy and the most expensive to keep. Loose fill has to be raked back into the kick out zones under swings and slides and topped up every year to hold its tested fall depth, and every top up is another delivery and another crew on site. Rubber tiles sit in between on price and bring a joint every 20 inches that lifts in Florida rain. Poured rubber surfacing starts at 8 dollars per sq ft installed and then asks for a rinse. Run all three over the years you actually own the playground and the gap closes.
