Rubber Driveway Over Your Existing Slab

Poured rubber works on a cracked but sound driveway, and here is where it does not.

A rubber driveway is poured rubber laid over your existing concrete driveway, from 8 dollars per sq ft installed, built denser and deeper than a pool deck because it carries vehicles. It suits a slab that is cracked but stable, and a house where the drive doubles as the barefoot path to the pool gate. It is not the answer for oil drips or a slab that has failed.

When it is the right call

Three situations make a rubber driveway worth the money. The slab is cracked but sound, meaning it is all one plane, the cracks are stable and nothing rocks under a car. Rubber bridges that and you skip demolition entirely. The drive is also the route people walk barefoot, from the car to the front door or across to the pool gate, and in July that concrete is punishing. Or you want the noise and the glare down, which a granule surface does simply by not being a hard flat reflector. Against that, a driveway is the hardest thing we pour. It takes weight, it takes turning tires and it takes hot brake dust. If your reason is only that the drive looks tired, resurfacing it is a lot of money for a cosmetic problem.

The honest limits

Turning wear is the real one. When a car is stopped or nearly stopped and the wheel turns, the tire scrubs instead of rolling, and it does it in the same two footprints every single day. That is where a rubber drive shows first, usually at the apron and where you swing into the garage. It is repairable in place, but you should know it is coming. Oil is the second. A steady drip from the same parked spot soaks into a porous surface, and once it is in there it stays. Park the leaker on the street or fix the leak. Third, wide surfaces need somewhere for water to go. A drive that already ponds after a storm will still pond, because we are adding a layer, not regrading your yard.

Driveway build versus pool deck

A pool deck build is tuned for bare feet. Softer, more give, and only foot traffic on it. A driveway build is the opposite end of the same material. The granule is denser, the binder ratio is richer and the layer goes down thicker, because a tire loads a small patch hard and a foot does not. That is why a driveway quote per square foot sits above a patio quote per square foot on the same street. Base matters more here too. We are looking for a slab that does not move under load, so we walk it, we look at the joints and we look at what the corners have done. If the concrete is broken into pieces that rock, no surface fixes that and we will tell you so at the measurement.

Questions we get

Can you pour rubber over an old concrete driveway?

Usually yes, if the slab is one stable plane. The old face is opened up mechanically, the cracks are handled, primer goes on and the vehicle build is poured over it, so nothing gets broken up and hauled away. Where a section has dropped, heaved or holds water after a storm, that repair happens first and it is on the quote before the surfacing is.

How much does a rubber driveway cost?

Poured rubber starts at 8 dollars per sq ft installed, and a driveway sits at the upper end because the build is denser and deeper than a walkway. Area, color coverage and the state of the existing concrete move the number. We measure free within 24 hours and put a single fixed number on paper for the whole job.

Will tires damage the rubber surface?

Rolling tires do not. Turning tires on a car that is barely moving do, over years, at the two or three spots where you always crank the wheel. The surface goes smoother and slightly lower there before it goes anywhere else. Because it is poured, those patches are refreshed in place without touching the rest of the driveway.

How long is the driveway out of use?

Plan on 1 to 3 days of crew time, then the 24 to 48 hour cure before it goes back into use. On a one car drive we often pour half at a time so you keep access. Booking a Thursday or Friday start usually means you are parking on it again over the weekend. Rain in the middle of a pour pushes the schedule, not the price.

If you are weighing the same pour for the walkway, patio and pool surround as well, start with rubber paving.
